6. Jude Gordon: Silk Mezzotint - $198

Thursday 11 & Friday 12 January

In this two-day workshop participants will make mezzotint plates and apply a variety of media to create an image(s) for printing.

The silk mezzotint acts similarly to an aquatint in that it creates tone where the ink is applied. Different tonal values are created by applying layers of media to ‘stop-out’ the silk mesh.

We will consider print matrix, weights of silk/ organza and types of media used to create an image (transparency and opacity).

I discovered silk mezzotint about 5 years ago and began to explore the possibilities of this media. I have created prints using aquatint and mezzotint techniques so I was interested in seeing how similar/ dissimilar the technique of silk mezzotint would be. I now use this printing technique in conjunction with other print media. The texture of the silk mezzotint adds an additional texture to the print surface. It is affordable and easy to use.

There are some examples of the silk mezzotints on my Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php? id=676988708
